Young Adult Issues Take Center Stage in State of the Union Address
(Washington, DC) – Today, President Biden outlined policy priorities for young adults in higher education, affordable health care, reproductive rights, the workforce landscape, economic opportunity, and touted his success in canceling student debt in his third State of the Union address.
As young adult issues were a predominant focus, several key priorities from Young Invincibles’ federal agenda were highlighted in President Biden’s address. These include enhancing the affordability and equitable access to higher education, protecting reproductive rights, improving career pathways for young adults, prioritizing mental health care, establishing a living wage and expanding tax credits such as the Child Tax Credit. Following through on these promises and continuing to prioritize the needs of young adults is essential for our future.
In the midst of an impending election, ongoing international crises, and the high cost of living, young people find themselves uncertain for the future. It is imperative to pass and implement policies that drive economic opportunity, embodying President Biden’s continued dedication to young adults as he finishes this Presidential term.
In response, Kristin McGuire, Executive Director of Young Invincibles said:
“Young adults face uncertainty and angst when looking towards their future. Despite distinct wins in the last year, young adults still grapple with the rising cost of living, student debt, and securing quality jobs.
We celebrate President Biden’s record-breaking student debt forgiveness of nearly $138 billion and continued dedication to widespread cancellation as an avenue to provide economic opportunity for young people. We’re excited to continue working with President Biden as he finishes the job of relieving millions from the crushing burden of student debt.
This year’s historic enrollment in health coverage underscores the importance of continuing to invest, protect, and expand the Affordable Care Act. President Biden continues to uplift the well-being of young adults in an extremely pivotal time as our nation faces a mental health crisis. We must reform health care to invest in comprehensive and affordable access to mental health services and treat it as preventive care. Furthermore, guaranteeing the right to abortion access and our bodily autonomy is pivotal.
President Biden’s address capitalizes on his commitment to young people and creating a more equitable future. Young Invincibles remains dedicated to building the strongest union possible for young people. There is still more fight ahead. But together, we are invincible.”
