College students are in truly unique situations and they need more than a rent moratorium. Their campuses are closed, they have lost their jobs, and are separated from their families. At no fault of their own, many off-campus students can’t continue with their current lease and many have been forced to abandon apartments in an effort to shelter in place with parents.
We are asking Governor Newsom to issue an emergency order to permit students who live in off-campus housing to vacate their leases without penalty. College students’ lives have been dramatically impacted by COVID-19 and California has the opportunity to provide relief that they desperately need.
