Plans for the Future

With open enrollment on new online health care marketplaces less than one week away, millions of young adults will begin their search for a health plan that makes sense for them.  Many will qualify for Medicaid if their state has expanded, and will have free coverage.  Millions more will receive very substantial monthly tax credits and opt for a more comprehensive plan, like a “silver plan.”

Some moderate-income young adults will get a smaller tax credit or may earn too much to qualify for a credit.  If they decide to keep their premiums lower, those young people will likely opt for a bronze or catastrophic plans, options that have received less attention in the media.  These plans cover the same benefits, but have higher deductibles before those benefits kick in.
