National Health Care Policy Advocacy

Young Invincibles’ is committed to improving the lives of young adults through the advocacy of national policies that expand access to affordable health, mental and reproductive care.

Health care enrollment in the United States is at a historic high thanks to the expanded Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium subsidies from the American Rescue Plan. The recently-enacted Inflation Reduction Act ensures these subsidies continue through 2025 and YI has endorsed legislation to make these subsidies permanent. Nonetheless, there’s more to do to ensure that more young adults can actually afford and access health care. This is of top priority at a time when half of young adults live with at least one chronic condition, and need routine access to medical care, specifically for mental health services. Alarmingly, a third of young adults under the age of 30 are struggling with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Yet, the out-of-pocket costs for a mental health provider often make routine care unaffordable and the lack of mental health professionals makes timely care inaccessible.

With the overturn of Roe v. Wade, YI is focused on ensuring access to adequate and quality reproductive and maternal care. YI supports passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act, legalization of abortion access everywhere, access to medication abortion, contraception, and critical investments to address racial inequities in health outcomes for people of color.

YI’s 2023 Health Policy Priorities Include:

  • Prioritizing affordable and equitable access to health care coverage;
  • Fighting for reproductive and maternal health care; and
  • Ensuring young people have the tools and information needed to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and other viral illnesses.
