Health Care Coverage Increase Fails in Texas Legislature

(Houston, TX) — Today, the Texas Legislature failed to pass a long-awaited health care coverage increase in a 68-80 vote. Texas remains one of only 12 states in the union that refuses to expand coverage for residents.

In response, Aurora Harris, Southern Region Director for Young Invincibles released the following statement:

“Today, Texas failed to take the urgent and vital step of closing health coverage gaps in our state by refusing to expand coverage to millions of Texans amid a global pandemic.

Young people have the highest uninsurance rate of any age group in Texas, failure to expand coverage will continue to adversely impact the health prospects and their ability to obtain comprehensive health coverage.

This action represents a setback in our efforts to provide affordable and accessible care in a state that boasts the highest uninsured rates of any state, but Young Invincibles and our coalition partners remain steadfast in our commitment to health care coverage expansion.”
