College Majors to Get You Hired

Originally posted on joinchangenation.org on January 23, 2012

I had loved theater ever since I was in junior high school. I took part in Drama Club and community theater groups in high school and was sure that I would become an actor. As junior and senior year approached, however, reality began to set in. If the acting career didn’t come through, I would need some other marketable skills.

As I filled out college application, I thought long and hard about what to declare as a major.
My single mother couldn’t afford to pay for my college education. I would need a sure job after graduation in order to repay my student loans. That’s when the head of the TV and media department at my high school, Mr. Terenzoni, told me about communication studies and the growing number of jobs in that field.

I did some initial research and decided that a major in communications was the best path for me, academically and beyond.

Unfortunately, many high school and college students don’t have their own Mr. T., someone who takes an interest in them and can point them in the direction of a growing field of study. It’s difficult to figure out where to go to school, let alone what to major in.

Young Invincibles just launched their Skills that Work Toolkit that gives a list of hireable college majors. This is a great resource that provides information on the job market and the fastest growing jobs for each state, allowing students to match their own personal interests with a field of study and increasing their chances of finding employment after graduation (and beginning to repay their loans).SkillsThatWork

After all, as important as post-high school education or training is, not all majors are created equal.
