Changes in 2014

  • Statewide insurance exchanges offering more options that resemble Expedia for health insurance. These competitive online marketplaces start in 2014. Mississippians will be eligible to purchase health insurance from the federal exchange.
  • Help with premiums: Get tax credits to help pay for the cost of buying insurance. You will qualify if 1) you don’t have an affordable offer of job-based coverage, and 2) you earn less than about $44,000 a year (or more if you have dependents).
  • Medicaid Expansion: the Supreme Court’s ruling on the ACA allows states to opt out of the law’s Medicaid expansion, leaving the decision to extend Medicaid, or coverage for low-income adults, up to states.
  • No more discrimination – everyone who wants to buy care can, and they can’t be charged more for based on health, gender, etc.
  • Mandate: Starting in 2014, everyone will have to buy insurance if they don’t already have it, although there are exemptions if insurance is too expensive.
