Biden to Take Action to Lower Health Coverage Costs for Millions

For YI: Over A Decade Long Advocacy Fight for Young Adults

(Washington, DC) – President Biden will once again take action to make health coverage more affordable for millions of Americans. Today, the administration will propose a fix to the “family glitch,” which locks many families out of affordable coverage through the health insurance marketplace. About 5 million people are impacted by the family glitch, meaning today’s actions will provide access to quality coverage for families across the country. Additionally, President Biden will sign the Executive Order on Strengthening Access to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, directing federal agencies to continue their work to make quality coverage more affordable. Former President Obama will be in attendance to mark the occasion along with health care advocates, including Young Invincibles (YI) – the youth advocacy and policy organization founded in 2009 to elevate young people in the debate over health care reform and increase enrollment among young adults. President Biden’s announcement comes after historic increases in enrollment over the previous Special Enrollment Period.

In response, Mina Schultz, ACA Outreach and Enrollment Program Manager for Young Invincibles issued the following statement:

“We are thrilled to see President Biden continuing to dedicate his presidency to strengthening the Affordable Care Act and making way for low-cost plans for young families. We want universal health coverage for young people, and the ACA has made great strides towards that goal – cutting the uninsured rate in half for young adults since its passage. Today’s announcement will improve access to quality, affordable coverage for young families across the nation.

This is the latest move by the Biden Administration to build on the ACA and roll back some of the damage done by the previous administration. The renewed investments in outreach and enrollment, paired with the increased subsidies in the American Rescue Plan, led to the highest number of people enrolled during the last open enrollment season. The Biden Administration’s commitment to health coverage is changing lives.

Working for health coverage for young adults has been a part of YI’s story since the very beginning. We are proud to be a part of this event at the White House announcing the latest move toward affordable, comprehensive coverage for all. We hope to continue a partnership with this administration as we keep up that fight going forward.”
