Biden Delivers Address Highlighting Legislative Achievements
Renews Calls to Finish the Job for the American People
(Washington, DC) – Last night, President Biden delivered his second State of the Union address to the nation. This address served as an opportunity to highlight his administration’s achievements over the last year. He also had the chance to lay out his agenda for the remainder of his first term.
President Biden’s address comes in the third year of a global pandemic, but one where a significant number of the population has received life-saving Covid-19 vaccines and access to testing thanks to the rapid distribution across the country. Biden has outlined the next phase beginning with the end of the Covid-19 Public Health Emergency on May 11, 2023.
In response, Kristin McGuire, Executive Director for Young Invincibles issued the following statement.
“We were pleased to hear the President reiterate his administration’s commitment to accessible and affordable health care as demonstrated by the extension of the American Rescue Plan Act’s ACA premium subsidies through 2025 included in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. He also renewed his call to get the job done on capping insulin prices for all at $35, especially for the millions of young people excluded from this benefit.
We were happy to see the President reaffirmed his commitment to free community college and a more robust Pell Grant program. We fully celebrate the President’s pivotal action with the Student Debt Cancellation Program but denounce the subsequent legal maneuvers holding cancellation and the financial prospects of millions of borrowers hostage.
The challenging nature of our current time reinforces the urgent need for significant mental health funding across the board.
We must push for federal legislation that will secure a person’s right to bodily autonomy and safe access to abortion. We must buttress our democracy at every level of government and stand resolute in the face of creeping authoritarianism.
Young Invincibles remains undeterred in our fight for a more fair and just world for all young people. The work ahead is not easy. Far from it. But together, we are invincible.”
