Young Invincibles has empowered young adults for almost 15 years; our network of youth community and student leaders numbers in the thousands. Young adults have proven time and time again that they will be the change past generations have hoped for. All we need to do is set them up for success. YI has embarked on a campaign to highlight the many alumni who have passed through our youth programs. Some now work as our colleagues and teammates, while others have been trailblazers at other institutions and programs. Some started their own campaigns to empower others. All around the world, YI alumni are doing wonderful work in service of the community.
Check out our next alumni highlight, Nick Thompson.
Throughout our National Youth Advisory Board program (NYAB), YI gathers and trains the next generation of local community leaders. Throughout the program, advocates learn how to tell their stories in an impactful manner, speak to elected officials, advocate for policy change, cultivate community, and pursue a policy they are passionate about, all while gaining transferable skills.
This month, we contacted former IL NYAB graduate Nick Thompson to see what he’s up to. We asked him a couple of questions and asked if he had some wisdom to share with other advocates nationwide.
What are you up to now after your time in the NYAB?
After my time in the NYAB, I’ve taken on a new role working with the City of Aurora in the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs. Additionally, I’m actively involved in organizing efforts with the Black Alliance for Peace, a dedicated organization that stands firmly against war, and imperialism, and advocates passionately for peace. Notably, my final project during my tenure with NYAB involved extensive research and advocacy for the ‘ECPS’ ordinance right here in Chicago, which has subsequently passed. This accomplishment stands as a significant triumph for the movement striving to enhance the democratization of public safety, which I am still a part of and pursuing fervently.
What is a skill you learned during the program?
One invaluable skill I acquired during the program was the ability to establish meaningful relationships; connecting grassroots local movements with those focused on electoral and national campaigns. Building these connections and effectively advocating for our causes close to our hearts drawing parallels to the local and international is essential to substantive change in our local and global communities.
Any advice for current and future advocates?
For current and future advocates, my advice is to remain unwaveringly present and boldly assertive. These qualities are crucial in driving meaningful change and achieving the objectives of the causes you’re passionate about. Do not be afraid to challenge the status quo or depart from consensus if it doesn’t align with your heart and values. Justice and liberation are never comfortable or popular at first.
