Medicaid is joint program between state and federal governments that provides free or low-cost health coverage to low-income children, parents, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. The Affordable Care Act (ACA, also known as Obamacare) initially made all adults and children making less than 133 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) – about $15,000 for an individual or $31,000 for a family of four – eligible for health insurance coverage under Medicaid in 2014.

Due to a Supreme Court ruling on the law, each individual state will now make the decision whether or not to expand Medicaid eligibility to cover these low-income adults. Whether or not you are eligible for Medicaid depends on your income level and in which state you live.
