Young Invincibles Applauds Nomination of Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education

(Washington, DC) – Today, President-Elect Biden announced the nomination of Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education. Dr. Cardona currently serves as Connecticut’s education commissioner and has two decades of experience as a public school educator.

In response, Dr. Kyle Southern, Policy and Advocacy Director, Higher Education and Workforce for Young Invincibles, issued the following statement:

“We know that all schools, from pre-K to college, face a challenging road ahead as the nation recovers from the pandemic. YI expected President-Elect Biden to identify a secretary who would position the Department of Education as a front-line defense for students’ and borrowers’ rights–someone who has been in the classroom and understands the real daily challenges that so many students face. We applaud the decision to appoint Dr. Miguel Cardona for this position.

After four years of failed and misguided policies by the current Administration that have left students more vulnerable and exposed to predatory practices, the stakes could not be higher for current students and more than 43 million student loan borrowers. Not only are student borrowers burdened with a weight of $1.6 trillion in student debt, but they are standing on the edge of a fiscal cliff as student loan repayments are now set to resume at the end of January. That immediate work awaits Dr. Cardona as he takes on this critical role.

We encourage Dr. Cardona to take the bold steps necessary to reduce student debt, protect borrowers, improve affordability, and advance equity. He must select other leaders who will bring integrity, competence, and a commitment to students and borrowers to their roles. We are eager to work together and stand ready to advance our shared values.”
