Young Invincibles Applauds Confirmation of Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education

(Washington, DC) – Today, in a 64-to-33 vote, the United States Senate confirmed Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education. Dr. Cardona previously served as Connecticut’s education commissioner and brings two decades of experience as a public school educator.

In response, Dr. Kyle Southern, Policy and Advocacy Director, Higher Education and Workforce for Young Invincibles, issued the following statement:

“The previous year has been a traumatic ordeal for the country and has placed significant stress on our education systems. At the same time, the Department of Education (ED) is emerging from four years of failed policies and serious neglect of our nation’s students and their interests. Today’s confirmation of Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education represents a turning of the page to a new chapter of student-focused leadership at ED. We are encouraged by the confirmation of a Secretary of Education with concrete experience in the classroom and a long record of equity-oriented leadership.

At Young Invincibles, we know college students and student loan borrowers are in dire need of assistance on multiple fronts, as detailed in our Path Forward: A Bold Policy Agenda for Young People, By Young People. We urge Secretary Cardona to take bold action to protect student borrowers, address the ballooning student debt crisis, champion equity, enhance affordability, and expand access. Young Invincibles is ready to work with a renewed ED to advance the interests of young people.”
