[WASHINGTON] – Young Invincibles applauds the U.S. Census Bureau’s decision to keep the question about choice of college major on the American Community Survey. In January, Young Invincibles led a coalition of over a dozen higher education researchers, advocates, and institutional representatives, defending the question and its pivotal role in understanding expected labor outcomes and demographic trends in what field students choose to study.

“Students lack knowledge about expected outcomes tied to their choice of college major, and losing this pivotal question would have exasperated the problem. The voice of the higher education community came through loud and clear, and we’re glad the Census listened,” said Tom Allison, Policy and Research Manager.

“There’s a misconception that we automatically know how much money graduates in any given field make, or where gender gaps persist among chosen majors. It takes investment in our statistical infrastructure and dedicated analysis to answer these questions,” Allison added.
