Texas Reaffirms Support for Community College Students

(Austin, TX) – This week, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 1786 into law. This legislation builds upon progress outlined in the 88th legislative session to align community colleges with student success through the outcomes-based funding model.  This ensures that all students – regardless of their background – can access and complete a high-quality postsecondary education that contributes to the Texas economy.

This legislation makes critical advancements for Texas students by enabling them to earn degrees and credentials aligned with high-demand, well-paying careers. It strengthens transfer pathways, expands the Financial Aid for Swift Transfer (FAST) program to include high school students, and enhances data collection to ensure policies effectively serve students’ needs.

In response, Kasey Corpus, Texas Policy and Advocacy Manager at Young Invincibles said:

“This is a transformative win for Texas students. By expanding access to fast, affordable pathways into high-demand careers, this legislation helps young people build brighter futures without taking on crushing debt. Building on the momentum of House Bill 8, a monumental step forward for community college students, this legislation reaffirms the importance of investing in the success and education of our students.”
