Ryan Beck, president of the Student Council at Missouri University of Science and Technology, is one of a small group of college students invited to participate in “Getting to Work,” a discussion on how college students and business leaders can work together to “improve the pathway from education to employment.”
‘Getting to Work’ will be held Feb. 19, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
Beck, a senior mechanical engineering major from Louisburg, Kan., was invited to participate in the program by Young Invincibles, a youth advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. Young Invincibles is co-sponsoring the event with the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The event will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Washington, D.C.
During the program, Beck and other college students will hear from national leaders including Margaret Spellings, former U.S. education secretary and now president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation; Cheryl A. Oldham, vice president of the Institute for a Competitive Workforce; and Dr. Anthony Carnevale, director and research professor of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.
Beck will also participate in a series of breakout sessions in which students and business leaders will address the question, “Moving forward, how can business and higher education continue to engage one another in the ever-important topic of bridging the gap from school to work?” The discussion will be moderated by Doug Lederman, a founder of the online news site Inside Higher Ed.
