Gig workers and contracted employees are common at a number of app based companies like Uber, Lyft and Doordash. These workers often do not get the same benefits and protections as other employees. Some of the benefits not afforded to gig workers include health insurance, unemployment insurance, and time off. COVID-19 has exposed how harmful this can be for gig workers as many who have lost their jobs do not qualify for unemployment benefits and are forced to fight for basic safety protections while on the job. As these companies grow and many more Americans struggle to pay the bills, the number of gig workers will grow making these protections more vital
