Senate Fails to Expand Child Tax Credit, Depriving Millions of Young Adults From Needed Support
(Washington, DC) – Yesterday, the Senate failed to expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for young adult parents. As a result of Republican legislators filibustering, The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act was blocked and an estimated 1.6 million young adult parents won’t receive the relief they deserve.
It is disappointing to see this bipartisan effort fail and prevent millions of young parents from seeing the support they need. This passed the House of Representatives with overwhelming support. Young Invincibles was excited to see legislators come across the aisle and work together to fight poverty. We are now devastated to see the Senate could not come together and agree that fighting child poverty was a critical venture.
Poverty is a policy choice in the U.S., and Young Invincibles will continue urging legislators to pass policies that address it. With the failure of the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, we are back to where we started, but nevertheless, the fight must persist.
In response, Alex Lundrigan, Federal Workforce and Finance Policy Coordinator at Young Invincibles said:
“Poverty is a policy choice, and some members of the U.S Senate chose to keep 400,000 children in poverty. Legislators blocked a massive opportunity to make progress for children and families. The expansion of the CTC in this negotiated package would have helped millions of young parents with low incomes. Instead, they are left wondering how they will pay for basic needs in an economy working against them. This bill was the first item on a long list of policy reforms we need to address poverty, and it is a grave mistake that it did not pass.”
