SCOTUS Overturns Landmark Roe v. Wade Decision

Action Triggers Swift Abortion Criminalization Across Many States

(Washington, DC) – Moments ago, in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturned Roe v. Wade, the 49-year-old landmark decision guaranteeing people the constitutionally protected right to an abortion. Justice Samuel Alito authored the majority decision joined by Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh, with Chief Justice Roberts authoring a concurring opinion. Justices Breyer, Kagan, and Sotomayor issued a joint dissent to the ruling.

The majority’s decision will trigger a cascading effect across at least 20 states criminalizing or restricting access to a safe abortion without exemption. Currently, 85 percent of all Americans support abortion access in all or some cases. This decision comes at a moment when abortions are increasing, reversing a 30-year decline.

The assault on the constitutional right to an abortion has signaled tacit permission to target reproductive health care beyond abortion access. Multiple states have sought to limit access to contraception

In response, Kristin McGuire, Executive Director for Young Invincibles issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision is a travesty – an attack on health care as we know it. What was already an urgent problem of access to abortion is now a full-blown crisis. The court has decided to choose political ideology over the right of Americans to control our own health, bodies, and futures. This decision to overturn nearly half a century of precedent will go down as a monumental stain on American history.

The nation finds itself in a precarious moment for our democracy and our economic security. Roe v. Wade’s demise and following consequences will reverberate for generations and will have an acute impact on young people – especially low-income folks, rural communities, and families of color.

Young people in America stand in vehement opposition to the aggressive and deliberate dismantling of our civil rights and attack on our access to health care. Young Invincibles stands ready to help young people fight this decision and protect access to abortion in their own communities.

We urge the Biden Administration and Members of Congress to spare no option, take decisive action, and mount a relentless defense of our constitutional right to an abortion. YI remains unflinching in our support for all young adults and their rights to health care access and bodily autonomy.”
