President Trump’s Day One Agenda Hurts Young People
Trump Uses First Day in Office to Attack Health Care, Voting, Workplace Protections, and Immigrant Communities
(Washington, DC) – Yesterday, President Donald Trump signed a litany of executive orders regarding health care, voting, workplace protection, economic opportunity, and immigration.
President Trump spent pivotal time on his first day in office to issue a slew of executive orders fulfilling campaign promises. These executive orders take aim at health care, withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), and deliberate attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th amendment. Additionally, he reversed several key executive orders issued by the Biden Administration, specifically related to Medicaid drug affordability, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and LGBTQ+, DEI, and workers’ rights protections. He also rescinded a previous directive regarding the Census, which will inevitably result in a decrease in the representation status of millions of undocumented individuals, and which could reshape future election maps.
These actions are detrimental to the health and well-being of young adults. Removing the U.S. from the WHO prevents future preparation to combat disease and deprioritizes the health and safety of Americans. Furthermore, rolling back on critical workplace protections poses significant threats to young workers and their financial future.
Several of these orders will take effect immediately, however, some are already being challenged in the courts.
In response, Kristin McGuire, Executive Director of Young Invincibles said:
“President Trump spared no time in making sweeping moves that will prove harmful to young Americans. Young Invincibles believes everyone – regardless of income, race, gender, or immigration status – deserves access to a high quality of life, affordable health care, higher education, and equal workforce opportunities, but these executive orders show the Trump Administration does not.
Our country’s strength lies in its diversity, and immigrants are integral to our communities and our country. President Trump used precious time during his first few hours in office to issue an abundance of dangerous executive orders grounded in blatant racism. These executive orders don’t only attack immigrant communities, they attack all of us — the fabric of who we are as a country. We have advocated loudly and tirelessly for DACA recipients to have access to FAFSA, ACA Marketplace health coverage, and the vital supports they need.
It is disappointing and disheartening to see direct attacks against communities vital to the strength of our country. These executive orders set the tone for the new administration and the next four years will be detrimental if they continue to prioritize ideological politics over the well-being of people.
Young Invincibles remains committed to ensuring all young adults have access to equitable care, resources, and opportunity. We know that when we fight for those of us whose families, dreams, and economic opportunity are at stake, we build a stronger and more prosperous future.”
