Young Invincibles Releases New State Report Cards Grading Investment In Higher Education

Release Comes on the Heels of Launch of Young Invincibles’ Student Impact Project, A Campaign to Empower Student Advocates Around Higher Education Reforms

[WASHINGTON]—Today, Young Invincibles released 50 report cards evaluating each state’s investment in higher education. The report cards evaluate states on a variety of factors, including tuition costs, spending per student, burden on families, state aid to students, and the proportion of state budget funding allocated towards higher education funding.

“Higher education budget cuts handicap not only students and their families, but the larger American economy,” said Aaron Smith, Executive Director of Young Invincibles. “Large tuition increases and declining financial aid have driven students into greater debt at a time they can least afford it. State legislators should act immediately to reprioritize higher education and make investment decisions that increase access to higher education, enhance financial security for this generation, and ultimately grow state economies.”

Today’s release follows the launch of Student Impact Project, a recent initiative by Young Invincibles that explores budget trends in all 50 states in higher education spending and empowers student activists to more effectively advocate for state policies that support college access, affordability, and success. Student financial aid and lending are heavily federal issues—but most direct taxpayer support for higher education is decided in state capitols.
