Young Invincibles’ Statement on Irresponsible House Budget’s Cuts to Community Colleges
TX House Budget Would Cut Public Community College Funding by 4.5 Percent
[HOUSTON]–José Eduardo Sánchez, Acting Southern Director of Young Invincibles, released the following statement in reaction to the release of the Texas House of Representatives’ 2016-2017 biennium budget:
“Roughly 8 in 10 Texans holding a bachelor’s degree have interacted with the community college system. A recent report we released found that barriers to higher education attainment are a major player behind the state’s young adult racial wage gap. The cuts to community college funding in the House’s budget would jeopardize hardworking young Texans’ ability to get a degree, find work, and earn a decent wage. With the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board having called for a 13.8 percent increase in funding, the Senate and Governor should reject the House’s proposal and call it what it is – irresponsible.”
