House Votes to Cut SNAP Funding to Feed Corporate Greed

(Washington, DC) –  Last night, the House Committee on Agriculture voted to cut $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The committee was tasked with cutting $230 billion, but through historic funding cuts to SNAP, House Committee Republicans were able to find a surplus to include a $60 billion farm bill. These drastic cuts to SNAP will have devastating impacts on young people, families, and the economy. Directly harming the American people, the bill proposes:

  • Reduces SNAP federal funding by 30 percent, forcing states to front the lack of funding. This cost sharing proposal included a base cost shift of 5 percent of benefit costs, additional cost shifts based on state error rates, and significant new requirements for states to cover 75 percent of administrative costs.
  • Expands existing SNAP work requirements to adults aged 55-64 and parents with older school-aged children (7-18), while also limiting states’ ability to waive these requirements during economic hardship. These stricter eligibility rules threaten to cut off food assistance for millions of low-income individuals and families facing challenges in securing consistent employment.
  • Limits SNAP ability to update the Thrifty Food Plan, the basis for calculating SNAP benefits, and adapt for future rising food costs.

In response, Krystal D. Milam, National Policy & Advocacy Director at Young Invincibles said:

“Forcing families to go hungry to feed corporate greed is sickening. More than 42 million Americans rely on SNAP to put food on the table and these cuts, the largest in history, will drastically harm young people and vulnerable communities. Congress has claimed to make these cuts to “reduce waste, fraud and abuse,” but feeding people is not wasteful. These proposed cuts go far beyond what was recommended, creating a surplus to further fund tax breaks for billionaires. It is shameful that our elected officials will prioritize the deep pockets of the ultra wealthy over the well-being of our most in need.”
