HealthCare.gov Application Will Now Link to Nonpartisan Voter Registration Information
(Washington, DC) – Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that people completing an application for health coverage at HealthCare.gov will also have the opportunity to learn how to register to vote through vote.gov. This important change comes one day after National Voter Registration Day and ahead of the annual open enrollment period.
This will go into effect starting September 20th.
In response to this update, Mina Schultz, Health Care Policy and Advocacy Manager at Young Invincibles said:
“Everyone should have a chance to vote and be a part of our democracy. We applaud HHS and CMS for moving its longtime nonpartisan offer of voter registration information on HealthCare.gov into the federal application for health coverage, where applicants are more likely to see the offer and then take the opportunity to visit vote.gov to access the information.
Young Invincibles is excited to share this update with our network and young adults nationwide as we continue to help people enroll in coverage and register to vote. There is a strong relationship between civic participation and health outcomes. With this update, HHS and CMS are empowering a broad cross section of U.S. citizens to improve their lives, and actively working to remove barriers to voting. We are thrilled to see this collaboration become a reality and help close the civic engagement gap.”
