Where we work

California

From the sun-soaked streets of Los Angeles to the marble halls of Sacramento’s Capitol, our California office organizes in a state that sets the pace for the nation, where youth power rises at the intersection of culture, politics, and possibility.

In the Golden State, young voices rise to lead and transform.

Since launching in 2012 as YI’s first regional office, Young Invincibles’ California has empowered thousands of young adults across the state with the tools and space to advocate for meaningful change in their communities and beyond. With team members based in Sacramento and Los Angeles, YI California engages with more than 3,000 young Californians each year to equip them with vital knowledge around health care and insurance access and literacy, higher education, and financial security. Through our Young Advocates Program, we train up to 50 young people annually on the ins-and-outs of building powerful movements and engaging with policy development at the state and local levels.

YI California is proud to have worked with young people in driving major policy wins over the years, including the Private Student Loan Collections Reform Act and 2022 budget investments to establish Basic Needs Centers at every California Community College. We recently released a case study report examining how CSU and UC campuses are implementing basic needs services.

We are also proud to be leading the fight with coalition partners to advocate for institutional debt protections for California students by amplifying student experiences and pushing for accountability from colleges that withhold transcripts and diplomas.
