Address Student Basic Needs on NY’s College Campuses

Freshman Experiences in College

Starting college as a freshman in New York was an exciting but challenging experience. Juggling classes and a part-time job became even harder when my household faced financial difficulties. Suddenly, I had to budget carefully just to make ends meet, and finding stable housing was a constant worry. Moving from place to place left me feeling unsettled and unsure about my future. The pressure of school added to the stress, with deadlines and exams piling up, making me feel overwhelmed.

Reaching out for help seemed daunting, especially when it came to my mental health. I didn’t know where to turn until I discovered support services on campus. The food pantry not only provided meals but also a sense of community, reminding me that I wasn’t alone in facing these challenges. Housing assistance programs offered a glimmer of hope in the midst of uncertainty. Most importantly, seeking help for my mental health was a turning point. Counseling services gave me a safe space to talk about what I was going through, making a significant difference in how I approached my struggles.

With these resources and support, I started to feel more in control, and the obstacles didn’t seem as daunting anymore. I realized the importance of reaching out when you need it most. To my fellow freshmen dealing with similar challenges, know that help is available. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. You’re not alone, and together, we can overcome these challenges.
