Support and Services
New York City is renowned for its widespread young adult poverty issues. However, when people think of poverty, the image of put-together young adults aged 18-30 typically doesn’t come to mind. The reality is that due to the exorbitant cost of living and inflation in NYC, many individuals in Generation Z struggle to afford basic necessities unless they come from wealthy backgrounds. Addressing the needs of students who lack access to essential resources such as food, housing, and medical services shouldn’t be a difficult concept to grasp. In fact, poverty could be alleviated if politicians ceased their efforts to impoverish the next generation. That’s why the provision of services by college campuses is crucial in today’s society. Considering the substantial expenses associated with attending college, institutions should give back to the community tenfold by offering improved accommodations for food, housing, and comprehensive health care plans that cater to students’ needs. This is particularly vital for students hailing from low-income backgrounds. Alexander Walsh is a Master of Public Affairs student striving to serve the community.
