Washington, D.C. — This weekend, President Trump signed an executive order and issued three memoranda said to provide economic relief during the current recession caused by the coronavirus. The Administration’s efforts were specifically tailored towards unemployment insurance, student loans, rental evictions, and a payroll tax cut.
“Beyond failing to understand that a president cannot spend taxpayer dollars by executive order, this President has once again decided to resort to political ploys, rather than providing direct and lasting relief for millions of Americans.
While we agree that American families need relief, these executive actions are nothing more than smoke and mirrors meant to distract, and are no substitute for robust steps to provide real unemployment insurance, aid for states & localities, assistance to health care facilities, and rental relief. We are facing the worst public health and economic crisis in generations and the President’s actions fall way short of what students, student parents, and families urgently need. It’s imperative that Congress work towards a deal ”
