Young Invincibles Responds to Congressman’s Faulty Assertion That Young Adults Getting Covered Under the ACA Is a ‘Ripoff’
[WASHINGTON]—This week, Rep. Aaron Shock (R-IL 18) delivered the Republican Weekly Address and described the Affordable Care Act as a ‘ripoff’ for young adults. Young Invincibles’ Co-Founder and Executive Director Aaron Smith released the following statement in response to Rep. Shock’s misguided comments: “Over half of young adults who are uninsured struggle with medical debt or medical bills. Rep. Schock should try telling any young person that has gotten sick or injured in a car accident and run up tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills that having insurance is a ‘ripoff.’ Under the Affordable Care Act, up to 16.7 million of America’s 19 million uninsured young adults could be eligible for Medicaid coverage, if all states expanded, or tax credits – in other words, the type of reduced cost coverage options that members of Congress themselves enjoy.”
