The Affordable Care Act greatly altered the ways in which Millennials will access health care and coverage. Among the many changes for young adults, we have identified five – the dependent coverage extension to age 26, reforms to college health care plans, the creation of catastrophic in- surance plans directed at young adults, the establishment of insurance exchanges, and the expansion of Medicaid eligibility to all low-income Americans – that will have unique and far-reaching effects on young adults. Individual states will take a key role in implementing these provisions. This paper reviews the current state status quo, changes made by the Affordable Care Act and related regu- latory decisions, and the role that states can take going forward in the implementation of these provisions.
