Young Invincibles’ Statement on VA Attorney General Herring’s Tuition Equity Advisement

Virginia DREAMers Could Save $18,102 a Year on Tuition

[WASHINGTON]—Today, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring advised that under current law, college students in Virginia who are lawfully present in the United States under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program qualify for in-state tuition. According to the Immigration Policy Center, today’s announcement stands to benefit an estimated 25,086 potential beneficiaries.

“Tuition inequity in Virginia has led to significant disparities in college completion among ethnic groups,” said Tom Allison, Policy & Research Manager at Young Invincibles. “By making college more affordable for Virginia DREAMers, Attorney General Herring’s advisement is a step toward closing that gap. We look forward to continuing to work with Governor McAullife and the General Assembly to make investing in higher education and bringing tuition rates down for all Virginia students a priority.”

According to CollegeBoard, on average, in-state Virginia students pay $10,366 in tuition at a 4-year public institution, whereas the average tuition rate for out-of-state students is $28,468 per year.
