Young Invincibles’ Statement on the Economic Impact of the ACA’s Contraception Coverage Requirement

[WASHINGTON]— Today, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in two cases brought by for-profit corporations challenging the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. Under the ACA, health plans must cover a range of preventive services for men and women, including FDA-approved contraceptives for women, for free.

Jen Mishory, Deputy Director of Young Invincibles, released the following statement on the economic impact of the law’s contraception coverage requirement:

“An estimated 27 million women are already benefiting from access to free preventive services, including contraceptives, under the ACA. Access to affordable contraceptives is particularly important for younger and low-income women, who struggle to use birth control consistently due to cost and face disproportionate barriers to accessing contraception. Protecting this access will have a positive impact not only on women’s health, but also on women’s educational attainment, workforce participation, and economic stability, and is crucial to the future health and economic prospects of this generation.”
