Young Invincibles’ Statement on Ryan Budget Proposal

[WASHINGTON, DC] This morning, the House Budget Committee released their fiscal year 2014 budget proposal. The proposal slashes everything from Pell Grants to job training to Medicaid, despite the fact that young people are already struggling with rising college costs and a youth unemployment rate twice the national average.

Rory O’Sullivan, Policy and Research Director for Young Invincibles said, “This budget creates barriers to opportunity for a generation already struggling with a brutal job market, the rising cost of tuition, and crippling student loan debt. There couldn’t be a worse time to make jobs less available or college more expensive, but that’s exactly what this budget would do for millions of young people. We need our leaders in Washington to come together and provide solutions in order to help get our generation back on track.”

The Ryan Budget Proposal:
o       Eliminates the Affordable Care Act, cutting everything from key Medicaid expansions that will cover millions of young people to tax credits to help millions more get insurance.
o       Eliminates youth job training programs based on The SKILLS Act (HR 803)’s blueprint, which would cut $1 billion from employment and training services that reach approximately 235,000 young people across the nation.
o       Keeps Pell Grant award amounts stagnant for the next 10 years, not allowing them to keep up with inflation costs, skyrocketing tuition rates or room and board costs for students.
o       Cuts Pell Grants for low-income students working their way through school.
o       Fails to address the looming interest rate hike that would double interest rates from 3.4% to 6.8% on millions of college students.

Young Invincibles recently released “A Fight for the Future: Education, Job Training and the Fiscal Showdown,” a report detailing how sequestration and budget cuts will reduce education and training opportunities for young adults.
