Young Invincibles Encouraged by College Ratings Framework

Jennifer Wang, Policy Director of Young Invincibles, released the following statement on the release of Department of Education’s Postsecondary Institutional Ratings System framework.

“While there are still many details to be finalized, we are encouraged by the Department of Education’s draft framework for the Postsecondary Institutional Ratings System. We support the vision and goals of the ratings system serving both accountability and consumer information functions, and we appreciate another opportunity to provide feedback.

“In particular, we’re encouraged by the Department’s commitment to include workforce outcomes in the ratings, because students tell us they pursue higher education in order to expand their career opportunities.

“We are also encouraged that the Department is seeking feedback on system design, because even a perfect ratings system would fall short if it was not user friendly.”

Young Invincibles has been conducting workshops around the country to test the usability of current tools as well as explore best practices in interface design both in education and in other fields. In the new year, we will release an in-depth literature review on cogitative information processing that should provide valuable information on how the Department should proceed in designing an intuitive system for students and families.
