North Miami Millennials Demand Facts About the Youth Jobs Crisis

Washington Park Community Resource Center Tour and Panel Discussion with Program Participants to Highlight Critical Solutions to Youth Unemployment

[NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FL] – As Floridians brace for national policies like sequestration to take effect, Forward March, the North Miami Beach Career Center, and Young Invincibles are working for young adults facing high unemployment.

On Wednesday, Young Invincibles, local workforce leaders, and Millennials facing unemployment woes will highlight The Paxen Learning Corporation’s Forward March program housed in the Washington Park Community Resource Center. Young Invincibles will continue their tour of North Miami’s jobs programs by visiting the newly-opened North Miami Beach Career Center on the following day.

Members of the media are invited to tour the Forward March facility, meet with program administrators and hear about the many opportunities available to young people because of the necessary programs offered.

WHAT:           Facility tour and panel discussion with Forward March

WHEN:          Wednesday, March 27, 2013 1PM-3PM

WHERE:       Washington Park Community Center
1528 NE 15th Court, North Miami Beach, FL

Over the past decade, Washington has cut more than $1 billion from the job-training sector – and then the Great Recession struck. Unsurprisingly, the proportion of young people with jobs has fallen almost 10%, and young workers are unemployed at a rate more than twice the national average. These trends are evident in Florida where:

  • The unemployment rate for young adults ages 18 to 24 is 15.6%[i]
    • For Black young adults it is 23.4%
    • For Hispanic young adults it is 11.3%
  • In comparison, the state unemployment rate is 7.8%
  • Since 2008 the median income for young adults in Florida ages 25 to 34 has fallen $3,500

Since the issues affecting unemployment rates among young people in America are vast, it is essential to invest in youth job training programs.

*This event is open to the public. Job trainers, job seekers, students, and all with an interest in unemployment are invited to attend.

*Note: Members of the media may schedule individual interviews with Dustin Summers, State Outreach Coordinator for Young Invincibles, by calling 202.378.3526 or e-mailing Rae.roca@younginvincibles.org.
