New Report Calls Unemployment Rates A Crisis for Young Adults in Minnesota

In Minnesota, the unemployment rate is 11 percent for young adults ages 16 to 24

[SAINT PAUL, Minn.] – In a time of across-the-board budget cuts, dismal job prospects continue to leave young Americans unsure about their economic future. Currently, young adults face a national unemployment rate of 16.2 percent, which is over twice the national average.  In Minnesota, the unemployment rate for young adults is less than the national youth unemployment rate, but still exceedingly high and about twice the state average overall.

Today, Young Invincibles released a detailed analysis of unemployment for young people in Minnesota. The fact sheet, GET THE FACTS About Youth Unemployment in Minnesota [http://jobs.younginvincibles.org/get-the-facts-about-youth-unemployment-in-minnesota/]  gives an in-depth look into how economic opportunity for young adults in the state has fallen and illustrates that:

  • The average Minnesotan ages 25 to 34 makes almost $2,000 less today than in 2005.
  • While young Minnesotans have fared better than their counterparts in many other states, the number of young people in the state with jobs has fallen 3 percentage points since 2005 and 9 percentage points since 2007.

Studies show that the inability to gain early work experience dims career prospects for a lifetime; if we do not act now, this crisis could have far-reaching economic consequences for all those living in Minnesota.

Young Invincibles is leading the charge to solve this issue by conducting a national tour to highlight the need to continue to push for policies that double down on workforce training and higher education that will safeguard our country’s economic future.

On Wednesday May 1st, Young Invincibles will hold a roundtable discussion with alumni and current students of the Young Adults Learning and Earning (YALE) program. Students will share their experiences in the program, their thoughts on youth unemployment, and solutions for the future. The event will be held at the Guadalupe Alternative Programs 381 E. Robie St. St. Paul, MN 55107 from 10-11:30a.m.
