January Jobs Report Shows Young Workers Falling Further Behind

[WASHINGTON, DC] – The economy added 157,000 jobs in January 2013, though young workers did not share in the job growth. The unemployment rate for 18 to 29 year olds rose 1.6 percentage points to 13.1 percent (not seasonally adjusted) – well above the national unemployment rate at 7.9 percent. Younger workers also had a difficult time as the unemployment rate for 16 to 24 year olds (seasonally adjusted) rose half a percentage point to 16.8 percent.

Rory O’ Sullivan, Policy and Research Director of Young Invincibles said, “Young workers started 2013 on the wrong foot as unemployment rates rose significantly for our generation. We need our leaders in Washington to stop fighting, and start working together to ensure all Americans benefit from the economic recovery.”

Unemployment rates for young African-Americans ages 16 to 24 remained relatively stable at an unacceptable 28 percent (not seasonally adjusted), well over 3 times the national average. Interestingly, unemployment for young Latinos is now lower than the average for their age group. Despite seeing a rise of 1.7 percentage points, the unemployment rate for Latinos ages 16-24 now stands at 17.2 percent, slightly below the overall 17.6 percent for 16-24 year olds (not seasonally adjusted).
