Senate Republicans Abandon Graham-Cassidy in Huge Victory for Young Americans

[WASHINGTON]–Today, Senate Republicans announced that they would not bring their latest proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) — the Graham-Cassidy amendment — to a vote. With the deadline for Republicans in Congress to advance a repeal bill this fiscal year coming up this Saturday, today’s announcement marks a major victory for the Millennial generation. Young Invincibles’ Executive Director Jen Mishory released the following statement on this development:

“For the past 10 months, millions of young people have lived in fear as Republicans in Congress attempted to repeal the ACA, which has helped more than 9 million young adults gain coverage. Among other things, Graham-Cassidy would have cut Medicaid by more than a trillion dollars, ended the program’s expansion, lifted the cap on out-of-pocket costs, and allowed insurers to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions. Thanks to the tireless efforts of activists across the country, this latest cruel attempt has failed.  

However, the need for continued activism remains. The Administration has sabotaged outreach and assistance for consumers during Open Enrollment; budgetary threats to Medicaid funding still loom; and CHIP funding lapses this Friday. Rather than try to undermine the American people’s access to care, it’s time for Republicans and Democrats to work together to build on the gains made in the ACA and make our health care system better. Young Invincibles remains committed to efforts to expand coverage and vigilant as we face continued attempts to do the opposite.”
