New Survey Finds 41 Percent of Marketplace Visitors Were 19- to 34-Years-Old

Young Adults’ Interaction with the Marketplace Is Encouraging Ahead of an Anticipated Enrollment Surge In the Coming Months

[WASHINGTON]—According to a new survey by the Commonwealth Fund, 41 percent of federal and state health insurance marketplace visitors were between the ages of 19 and 34. The survey also found that nearly 6 in 10 of these shoppers indicated that they intend to enroll or check their eligibility to qualify for monthly tax credits by March 31, 2014, which could make premiums more affordable for up to 9 million of the country’s currently uninsured young adults.

“We are thrilled to see this survey’s results reflect what we are seeing on the ground everyday—young people, many for the first time, are excited to have access to affordable coverage,” said Aaron Smith, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Young Invincibles. “We are pleased to see that young people, who have lower rates of health insurance literacy, are doing their homework on how they could qualify for free or reduced-cost coverage options.“

“It’s a positive sign to see young adults engaged this early in the enrollment process. We know from Massachusetts’ enrollment experience that enrollment rates among the non-chronically ill population spiked in the months preceding the individual mandate, so we look forward to seeing these numbers continue to rise.”
