Millennial Unemployment Rate Remains Stagnant in September

[WASHINGTON] — The unemployment rate for young adults ages 18 to 34 remained unchanged from August to September at 7.0 percent (seasonally adjusted), while the national unemployment rate held at 5.1 percent.

“Facing stagnant unemployment rates that are still significantly higher than the national unemployment rate, we must help young adults get the skills and training they need to find work. This begins with access to affordable higher education, but must also include robust registered apprenticeship and job training programs,” said Jennifer Wang, policy director of Young Invincibles. “Regretfully, caps on non-defense discretionary spending put in place under the Budget Control Act and later in sequestration threaten to make college less affordable and shrink vital job training programs. Congress should lift these unnecessary caps to better ensure Millennials’ economic prospects.”

Here are more details on how different populations of young people fared in September 2015:

– The unemployment rate for black/African American young adults ages 18 to 34 is 13.5 percent (not seasonally adjusted) in September, down from 13.8 percent in August.

– The unemployment rate for Hispanic/Latino young adults ages 18 to 34 is 7.0 percent (not seasonally adjusted) in September, down from 8.2 percent in August.

– The unemployment rate for Asian-Pacific Islander young adults ages 18 to 34 is 3.8 percent (not seasonally adjusted) in September, down from 4.6 percent in August.

– The unemployment rate for white young adults ages 18 to 34 is 5.7 percent (not seasonally adjusted) in September, remaining the same since August.
