Relief for Millions of Young People

US%20CensusThe US Census Bureau released the latest round of numbers showing that young Americans have had a tough time over the previous year. 2 million additional young adults went without health care, bringing the total number of uninsured to 21 million.  The disappointing trend tracks the worsening financial situation for young people. 12.2 million young adults now live below the poverty line, an increase of 1.6 million over the previous year. Their jobless rates have risen far above that of the entire population with young people aged 16-24 reporting a scary 18.1% unemployment rate in August.  These figures show a continued need for focus on policies that help young adults gain access to quality, affordable health care and steady employment. It’s a good thing that the new health reform rule allowing young adults  to join their parents plan begins to take affect on Thursday.  That will be one less worry for millions of young people.
